My latest work and news...
Welcome to my newsletter and thank you for joining me here.
I plan to make this a place where I can update you directly on my latest work and take you inside my studio to share some of my inspirations and techniques. With the ever-changing algorithms on social media, it’s becoming more difficult to reach everyone I’d like, so I hope that this will allow me to keep in touch more easily.
I will also be offering exclusive discounts and advance notice of new work going on sale just for those who receive my newsletter.
If you have any questions, comments or enquiries about my work, you can email me (stevenhigginsonart@gmail.com or simply hit reply to this message) or leave a comment below.
I look forward to chatting with you soon!
NEW WORK
I’ve been busy finishing off my latest commission, Portrait of Larsen, before it goes off to its new home in Milan. Larsen contacted me via Instagram and I worked from photos he sent me. More information on my commissions process can be found on my website here.
IN THE STUDIO
READING…
My long-held fascination with the Old Masters continues…I’ve recently been stocking up on second-hand books about their work and have come across some brilliant finds.
I sourced a few from the series by Andrew Morrall; The History and Techniques of the Great Masters — Rembrandt, Rubens and Manet. Unlike many art books, these have large colour photographs, close-ups of the paint application on the portraits and a description of technique. They also have a fascinating insight into the artists’ colour palettes and studio setup. Back in my own studio, I’ve been trying to add more depth and texture to my paintings, particularly within skin tones, so these books have been a great inspiration.
LISTENING TO…
To me, music is an integral part of my studio — it helps focus me and give a boost of energy when needed depending on the song or artist, so I have quite an eclectic taste. This week, my most played song is Faith to Arise by Terry Reid. In my opinion, he’s one of the most underrated vocalists and songwriters of the 60s/70s era.
LIFE LATELY
My partner and I welcomed our first baby, Marlowe Blossom, at the beginning of June, so it’s been a busy but very special time for us all. I’m fortunate in that my studio is attached to our home so I have been able to continue working without being too far away.
I’m aiming to paint monthly paintings of Marlowe so that I can capture her as she changes…they really do grow as quickly as everyone says!
I’ve always enjoyed painting children — you can view some of my previous commissions in my online gallery here. I find more playful compositions and loose, expressive brushstrokes lend themselves well to capturing the innocence and joy of everyday moments.
Before I sign off, I’d love to hear what kind of content you’d like to see more of in my newsletter — you can vote in the poll below, or leave me a comment.
Thanks for reading and until next time,
Steven
